When Dr. Somkiat Viratyosin (Known as Dr. Sam) was a young man living in Thailand, practicing medicine in a rural area is exactly what he expected to do — he just didn't think it would be in the United States. Although he received most of his medical training in the United States (receiving his medical degree from Brown University in Providence, RI) he returned to Thailand to practice medicine and finish his training in Orthopedic Surgery. However his wife was unable to adjust to the hot climate in Thailand and decided to return to the United States. Soon after, Dr. Viratyosin also returned to reunite with his family, who were then living in Massachusetts.
Dr. Viratyosin joined the Stevens Community Medical Center staff in May of 1996 and is Chief of Surgery. He is a member of the American Board of Surgery. Patients can make appointments to see Dr. Viratyosin directly without a referral from primary care doctors.
Dr. Viratyosin, his wife Gloria, and their three children Tasaneeya, Kevin, and Tayvin live in Morris.
Dr. Viratyosin feels serving in a small hospital also has many advantages. "There`s more variety here," he said. "I’m a general surgeon, with an interest and skill in trauma." Besides general surgery, he performs general orthopedic procedures as well.
