Stevens Community Medical Center is now offering photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AKs). AKs are a common precancerous skin lesion, which if left untreated, have a potential to develop into potentially serious squamous cell skin cancer. AKs most commonly develop on areas of skin with increased sun exposure and over time as one becomes older.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a unique treatment for AKs which combines a skin applied, light sensitizing agent (Levulan® Kerastick®), followed by exposure to a specific source of blue light known as Blu-U®. It is especially useful for the efficient treatment of large areas of sun damaged skin, such as the entire upper scalp, face or forearms. It is generally well tolerated and has a good efficacy both for eliminating both visible and invisible AKs.
At SCMC, we encourage you to make annual skin checks and to ask your provider about any questionable areas. Regular skin exams are a key to early detection, when skin cancer may be prevented or most readily treated. For appointments with Dr. Lewis or Risa Dorweiler call 320-589-7600.
