History

Stevens Community Medical Center is the culmination of the dreams of the people of this area.  Prior to 1951, there were three hospitals in Morris.  In 1916, Dr. E.F. Fitzgerald operated a hospital out of his home; in 1924, Dr. C.E. Caine opened the Morris Hospital which later became the Hoffman Nursing Home on West Seventh Street; and in 1932, interested county citizens formed the Stevens County Hospital Association and purchased the E.F. Jones residence and converted it into a hospital.  This hospital later became a nursing home and later was occupied by a fraternity.  In 1940, the Stevens County Farm Bureau proposed a single hospital and subsequent elections supported a $300,000 bond issue for a new hospital.  Construction of the new 50 bed hospital began in May 1950 at a total cost of $550,000.  The new Stevens County Memorial Hospital was dedicated on November 18, 1951 and treated its first patients in December 1951. 

From 1975-1977 the facility underwent major construction of a new wing and clinic, including ancillary facilities and remodeling of the existing hospital.  This $2.4 million project made Stevens County Memorial Hospital one of the most up-to-date facilities in the area. The hospital transitioned from being a county hospital to being organized as a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) hospital in 1984, resulting in the name change to Stevens Community Memorial Hospital. A decade later, in 1994, the hospital purchased the Morris Medical Center (physician-owned clinic) and became Stevens Community Medical Center. 

In 1998, Stevens Community Medical Center completed a 15,000 square foot addition to house new clinic facilities, including numerous exam rooms and state-of-the-art procedure rooms.  In August of 2007, construction was completed for the new inpatient hospital addition located above the clinic.  This addition featured all private inpatient rooms with private bathrooms and showers.  Each patient room was designed around proven patient safety guidelines with identical layouts, built-in scales, and beds that can be lowered to 18 inches from the floor.  New birthing suites offer a family type atmosphere and private whirlpool tubs.  In addition, a new chemotherapy and infusion therapy area was added to provide plenty of space and patient privacy.  The next phase of renovation of the old hospital area included Behavioral Medicine and Finance.  In the Fall of 2015, a new operating room suite and procedure area were constructed.  In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, construction started late summer of 2020 on a new Urgent and Respiratory Care Clinic.  After much planning, construction began in the fall of 2023 for a new Emergency Room project that will also include updates to Radiology and Therapy Services. 

The Courage Cottage was built in 2001 as a Hospice/Respite care home but was certified as an Assisted Living Facility in 2021.  The Courage Cottage can house up to 5 residents at a time, offering specialized assisted-living care in a home-like setting.  

In 2008, Stevens Community Medical Center purchased the Starbuck Clinic, hiring on all the employees.  In December 2017, the Starbuck Clinic was designated as a Rural Health Clinic. The Starbuck Clinic offers primary care services five days per week. Dermatology and podiatry appointments are also available on a routine basis.

Stevens Community Medical Center is a not-for-profit charitable 501(c)(3) organization licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health as a Critical Access Hospital (CAH), and holds membership with the American Hospital Association, Minnesota Hospital Association, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, and other third-party payors.  It is a designated Acute Stroke Ready and Trauma Level IV hospital. In October 2021, Stevens Community Medical Center’s Morris clinic gained Rural Health Clinic designation. 

Stevens Community Medical Center is considered a regional medical center for West Central Minnesota and is licensed for 49 beds and 5 bassinets.  Due to our designation as a Critical Access Hospital, only 25 beds (acute or swing bed) may be operational.  The Medical Center provides a complete scope of ancillary services, including: Emergency Care, Intensive Care, Surgery (including short-stay procedures), Maternity Care, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Therapy Services, Patient and Community Education, Behavioral Medicine Services, Social Services, Radiology, Laboratory, and Nutrition Counseling.  The attached clinic has a strong group of Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in the practices of family medicine, urgent care, general surgery, obstetrics, orthopedics, podiatry, dermatology, oncology, otolaryngology (ENT), urology, and ophthalmology.  The clinic offers services seven days a week, which includes weekend hours in the Urgent and Respiratory Care Clinic.  The Behavioral Medicine department offers outpatient psychiatry, psychology, and therapy options. Several consulting specialists, in areas such as cardiology, audiology, nephrology, and neurology, also provide care at SCMC on a routine basis.

Stevens Community Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital, fully-integrated, healthcare delivery system located in Morris, Minnesota that provides a broad array of medical, surgical and mental health services, including swing bed, intensive care unit, and acute care setting.

Clinic Services

Stevens Community Medical Center offers clinic services seven days a week with Emergency Department available 24/7 and also a Urgent and Respiratory Care Clinic open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, weekends & holidays 9am-12:30pm.
Morris Clinic Staffed by family practitioners, orthopedics, general surgery, podiatry, dermatology, optometry and various specialists.

Starbuck Clinic Staffed by a family practitioner, a nurse practitioner, and a physician assistant. Holiday and weekend clinic hours are available at the Morris location.
