Stevens Community Medical Center and NovaCare Rehabilitation are pleased to announce that dry needling is now available as part of our physical therapy services. This specialized technique is provided by certified physical therapists, and may be incorporated into individualized treatment plans to help patients address muscle pain, tightness, and movement limitations.
What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a clinical intervention used by physical therapists to target myofascial trigger points — tight bands of muscle that can contribute to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. During the treatment, thin, solid needles are gently inserted into specific muscle areas to help release tension, improve circulation, and support the body’s natural healing processes.
Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Eastern medicine principles, dry needling is rooted in Western anatomy and physiology and focuses on restoring optimal muscle function.
How It Can Help
Dry needling may be beneficial for people experiencing discomfort associated with:
- Shoulder & rotator cuff pain
- Low back pain/neck pain
- Iliotibial band syndrome
- Tennis elbow
- Tendinopathies (e.g., Achilles, biceps)
- Whiplash/neck pain
- Hip pain
- Heel/foot pain
- Headache related to neck muscle tension
When combined with therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and other evidence-based physical therapy interventions, dry needling can be part of a comprehensive approach to improving movement and reducing pain.
Certified Practitioners
This service is offered exclusively by certified physical therapists on the NovaCare team who have completed specialized training in dry needling. They will assess each patient to determine whether this treatment is appropriate within the context of a personalized plan of care.
Is Dry Needling Right for You?
Dry needling isn’t necessary for every patient, but it can be a valuable option for those with persistent muscle discomfort or mobility restrictions. Your physical therapist will discuss goals, expectations, and any questions you may have during your evaluation.
