Advanced Phototherapy Now Available at SCMC Dermatology

Phototherapy

If you’re living with a chronic skin condition, finding the right treatment can make a significant difference in your comfort, confidence, and quality of life. Stevens Community Medical Center Dermatology Dept. is pleased to offer advanced phototherapy, a safe, non-invasive treatment option for patients with certain chronic skin conditions.

What is Phototherapy?

Phototherapy is a medically supervised treatment that uses carefully controlled ultraviolet (UV) light to help reduce inflammation, slow the rapid growth of skin cells, and improve the appearance of affected skin. Unlike natural sunlight or tanning beds, phototherapy delivers specific wavelengths of light in a controlled medical setting to maximize benefits while minimizing unnecessary UV exposure.

Our new state-of-the-art phototherapy system offers both narrowband UVB light therapy, allowing our dermatology providers to personalize treatment based on each patient’s diagnosis and individual needs.

Conditions Phototherapy May Help Treat

Phototherapy has been used safely and effectively for many years to help manage a variety of chronic skin conditions, including:

  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
  • Vitiligo
  • Certain other inflammatory skin conditions as recommended by your provider

If topical creams or other treatments have not provided the relief you’re looking for, phototherapy may be another option to discuss with your dermatology provider.

What to Expect During Treatment

Phototherapy treatments are performed in our dermatology clinic using a specialized light therapy unit. During each treatment, you’ll stand in the unit while your skin is exposed to carefully measured doses of therapeutic UV light.
