Why Get the Flu Shot This Year?

Each year, influenza (“the flu”) causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and tens of thousands of deaths in the United States alone. The good news? A flu shot is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and those around you.

1. Flu shots prevent illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu vaccination reduces the risk of having to see a doctor for flu illness by 40–60% during seasons when the vaccine is well matched to circulating viruses (CDC).

2. They reduce the risk of severe complications.

Even if you still catch the flu after being vaccinated, studies show you’re more likely to have a milder illness. The CDC reports that vaccinated patients have shorter hospital stays, fewer ICU admissions, and a lower risk of death compared to those who are unvaccinated (CDC).

3. They help protect others.

Flu doesn’t just affect you — it can be especially dangerous for infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with chronic health conditions. By getting vaccinated, you also help reduce the spread of flu in your community and protect the most vulnerable around you (Mayo Clinic).

4. The vaccine is safe.

You cannot get the flu from the flu shot. Most flu vaccines use inactivated viruses or viral proteins, which simply help your body build protective antibodies. The FDA closely monitors every batch of vaccine to ensure safety and effectiveness (FDA).

5. You need it every year.

Flu viruses change from season to season, and your immunity from last year’s vaccine fades over time. That’s why experts recommend getting a flu shot every fall, ideally by the end of October (CDC).
